Collection: Jungle

Initially inspired by the tropical beauty of India, Jungle is an ongoing study of spatial compositions, where architectural planes and Samira’s love for nature come together. From June to September, the monsoons bring heavy rainfall to India. During this time, most of India’s tropical regions transform into a magical lush green world. Full of life, the jungles come alive with exotic flora and fauna. Having lived most of her life in the dense and populous city of Mumbai, Samira was deeply mesmerized by the complexity and biodiversity of the tropical plant world. She traded her love from a concrete jungle for nature’s jungles and moved to Goa, India.

Jungles cover less than 2 percent of land on our planet and inhabit more than half of the plant, animal and insect species in the world, while plants being the binding factor for most other life forms. Due to human activity, jungles are shrinking at an alarming rate and each day several life forms are going extinct. Being an animal lover and a vegan, Samira feels the need to bring out the importance of plants and how we need to protect the biodiversity of jungles on our planet. Having spent a few years living in the lush state of Goa, she wanted to explore how to bring plants into her art.

The latest paintings, in her Jungle series, are fuelled with inspiration from the Island of Hawaii. Many of the plants, animals and insects species that reached the island, had millions of years to evolve without the presence of predators. Resulting into a magical world full of unique species that are only found on the Hawaiian islands.

Samira imagines herself on the other side of a utopian world. With plants by her side, she hopes that someday all beings of this planet may live in peace and harmony. Each painting starts as a watercolour sketch, which is then recreated onto a wood panel in the form of delicate layers and textures in acrylic paint. Finally, the artwork is finished off with leaves referenced from photographs she had taken in Hawaii during her recent trip in Feb 2020.
